Poultry Houses – how many chickens?

Poultry Houses come in many different sizes and shapes. Depending on how many chickens you wish to raise and how many chickens per square meter – the size of your poultry house will vary. You can also have different dimensions depending on the space you have available for your chicken house. These factors will answer the question “how big should my chicken house be?”

30m x 6m poultry house - 2000 - 3000 chickens

The most common widths for small poultry houses are 6 meters wide and 3m wide. You can then make them as long or as short as you please. To calculate how many chickens you can place in a house – take the length multiplied by the width multiplied by the number of chickens you wish to place per square meter. Generally you should place between 12 and 15 birds per square meter. Some poultry houses have up to 20 birds per square meter – but if you are a new poultry farmer I think you would be pushing your luck with so many chickens per square meter. The higher the number of chickens per square meter the higher your chances of problems with disease etc. I would, if I were an new farmer, place no more than 12 chickens per square to begin with and slowly build up as you learn the chicken farming game. An exapmle of how many birds to place would be as follows. Your house is 30m x 6m. L x B x chickens/sqm. 30 x 6 x 12 = 2160 chickens in the poultry house. You will then need to know how many drinkers and feeders to place.
